WASHINGTON (AP) —  Federal health officials opened a criminal investigation Friday into the Georgia peanut-processing plant at the center of the national salmonella outbreak. President Obama pledged stricter oversight of food safety to prevent breakdowns in inspections.

The investigation into Peanut Corp. of America follows reports of shoddy sanitation practices and inspections that found the company sold contaminated peanut products to food makers.

At least 529 people have been sickened as a result of the outbreak, and at least eight may have died because of it. More than 430 products have been recalled.

In a statement late Friday, Peanut Corp. expressed its “deepest and most sincere empathy for those sickened” and said it was reviewing the facts to determine exactly what happened.

WASHINGTON - If you’re a criminal and you’re not entitled to be in the United States, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano wants you out of the country. Napolitano wants what she calls “criminal aliens” off American streets. She is looking at existing immigration enforcement programs to see if taxpayers are getting the most bang for their buck.

“That sounds very simple, but it’s historically not been done,” Napolitano said, speaking to reporters and senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials Thursday.

About 113,000 criminals who were in the U.S. illegally were deported last year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said. The agency estimates there are now as many as 450,000 criminals in federal, state and local detention centers who are in the country illegally.

The Democrat bill takes money–actually, it bor­rows money–and decides where it should go. It does virtually nothing to stimulate the economy while it wastes billions of taxpayer dollars. It’s a hodge-podge of long-supported pet projects that the normal budget process would have thrown out. Using the troubled economy as their motive, Dem­ocrats have opened the floodgates for all sorts of outrageous wasteful spending. Here are just a few examples from the Senate’s bill, which we will debate next week:

* $400 million for researching sexually transmit­ted diseases,
* $200 million for bike and pedestrian trails and off-road vehicle routes,
* $200 million to force the military to buy envi­ronmentally friendly electric cars,
* $34 million to renovate the Department of Commerce headquarters,
* $75 million for a program to end smoking, which if successful will bankrupt the children’s health program Democrats are about to pass.

WASHINGTON - The $800 billion-plus economic stimulus measure making its way through Congress could steer government checks to illegal immigrants, a top Republican congressional official asserted Thursday.

The legislation, which would send tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple, expressly disqualifies nonresident aliens, but it would allow people who don’t have Social Security numbers to be eligible for the checks.

Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill and one making its way through the Senate would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number, to qualify for the tax credits.

A revolt among GOP conservatives to similar provisions of a 2008 economic stimulus bill, which sent rebate checks to most wage earners, forced Democratic congressional leaders to add stricter eligibility requirements. That legislation, enacted in February 2008, required that people have valid Social Security numbers in order to get checks.

WASHINGTON — President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) —  Suspected U.S. missiles killed 18 people on the Pakistan side of the Afghan border Friday, security officials said, the first attacks on the Al Qaeda stronghold since President Barack Obama took office.

At least five foreign militants were among those killed in the strikes by unmanned aircraft in two parts of the frontier region, an intelligence official said without naming them. There was no information on the identities of the others.
